Caring For Hardwood

Solid wood is alive. It moves a little with the seasons and darkens or warms with light. A few simple habits keep it beautiful for generations.

Every Piece

  • Dust with a soft, dry cloth. A barely damp cloth is fine for marks, then dry it straight away.
  • Avoid sprays, furniture polish and household cleaners. They cloud the finish.
  • Keep pieces out of strong direct sun, which fades and changes the wood's color over time.
  • Keep them away from heaters, vents and very humid rooms, which make wood move.

Wall Pieces

  • Hang on an inside wall where you can, away from radiators and bathrooms.
  • Use the hidden keyhole or hanger on the back, on a screw or anchor rated for the weight.
  • Never touch carved calligraphy with anything wet. Dust it with a soft brush.

Oil-Finished Pieces: Boards And Keepsakes

  • Hand wash with mild soap and warm water, then dry and stand it on its edge.
  • Never put it in the dishwasher or leave it to soak.
  • Re-oil periodically, about once a month for boards in regular use or whenever the wood looks dry, using a food-safe hardwax oil such as Odie's Oil, mineral oil, or beeswax board butter.

Lacquered Furniture, Cabinetry And Wall Pieces

  • Dust with a soft microfiber cloth. A lightly damp cloth is fine for marks, then dry it straight away.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive pads, sprays and furniture polish, which can dull or cloud a lacquered surface.
  • Wipe up spills promptly, and use coasters and trivets on tabletops and consoles.

Resin, Brass And Glass

  • Keep hot pans and drinks off resin. Use a trivet or coaster.
  • Wipe brass with a dry cloth. Its warm patina is part of the piece.
  • Clean glass with a soft cloth and a little glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth, never onto the wood.

Lead Times

Every piece is made to order. Most take 4 to 6 weeks from the day you approve the design, and larger architectural work can take longer. We confirm your timeline when we confirm your order.

Meant to live with you for generations.
